About Gilbert Wong Photography:

[PAST] I studied in Miri Sarawak before and I been shooting with a Sony point and shoot camera I bought myself. My very first love in digital photography. Did a lot of self portraits (so vain, I know), things I do with my uni-mates, and outdoor scenery. Basically I shoot anything bout my life. I created few hundred folders of pics with my trusty compact camera till it died when I last brought it for my jungle trekking. So many memories with my compact cam. Even created short clip with my friends through it. Come to think of it, I been carrying it everywhere I go during my Uni time. I miss you, sony W1.
[PRESENT] I specialized in actual wedding day shoot, slide show designs and assisting in commercial shoots.

    June 29th, 2010

This was a wedding that was full of international guests around the world from Australia, Indonesia, Norway, Canada and Malaysia too. Not forgetting the huge Hummer being used as a wedding car. Pink colored ribbons on a black testosterone car, IMAGINE that! hehe. The car belong to the bride’s brother and he said it will be the last time it will be decorated pink. There is individual wireless headset for each passenger to watch their tv or play games.

Wedding ceremony was held in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Kota Kinabalu. The church was really classical for a wedding setting. Both of them work with Sabah Tourism. Love the video trailer that they did just like the HP laptop advertisement on their childhood montage moments. Groom is a graphic designer and jam with his friend through his passion with guitar.

Thanks to Anna-Rina for allowing me to tag along this shoot and she is an amazing photographer as well. Do check her website out as well when you are free.

Check out the shots I did for the day!

If it’s raining outside, should I shoot?

    June 11th, 2010

My first section on photography tip. A question that I googled before myself when I was still new in photography. I always worry what will happen to my gears. Here are some of my real life encounter. Hope it helps you when you see dark clouds out there.

It has been raining cats and dogs this month and it has not spoil my mood to shoot at all! I will just wait it out as I always believe before and after a rain is always the best time to shoot portrait sessions or sceneries. Why? Cause it has blue sky, fat clouds with yellow sun appear behind those clouds which can cause more dramatic sky than any normal day. I just assisted George Yong again today for the 3rd time showering under the rain with Nikon D300, D90, Flashes and Lenses wet under moderate rain. The kind that really wet the whole gears and us as well. We just need to trust our equipments and Nikon did a good job under the rain. Bring another umbrella just to protect some of the lens that you not yet ready to shoot.

One tips that I want to share with you all is make sure after the raining shoot, wipe your gears and use blower and wipe again. Then keep in an air conditioned room if you do not have a dry box to keep in. Just be careful when you wake up don’t directly take out your cold camera out of your room as it can cause condensation. Leave it in your camera bag and let it acclimatized to outside room temperature before use again.

You know what, the sunset or the sky are even more dramatic after the rain. We just need to persist and believe that there is always hope. Remember guys, if you see those dark clouds do not keep away your cameras. Just drive out under the rain and reach to your destination. You will never know what silver lining is waiting for you.

*ps- the shots below taken with my wet iPhone too ;)

See how the colour changes in one sunset!! From yellow to purple to blue. No editing at all.

p/s- My first Sony W-1 Compact Camera Died because I used it under the rain in the jungle. So it all depends on your camera models and lenses durability against rain drops.

    Recently engaged?

    June 2nd, 2010

    To my dearest readers,

It been sometimes since I update my blog again. But I did upload my latest shots on my facebook fan page. If you not yet like me and you are on this blog, then I strongly urge you to click like on www.gilbertwong.com/fanpage in facebook or follow me on twitter www.twitter.com/kagewong.

As some of you understand, I offer few Creative Session portraiture shoot in Melbourne, Australia for this coming month and next. I’m so excited as the date is coming so near. I’m also afraid of new environment but afraid is a good thing cause I’m coming out from my comfort zone and I just need to focus what I do best and not my weaknesses.

This Creative Session is not only for students but also very suitable for engaged or dating couples who thinking to have a casual shoot or even a beautiful pre-wedding portraits are most welcome to engage me. E-mail me at kagewong@gmail.com for a quotation for Malaysia or Australia. I already did a brochure on the Australia package pricing on this blog and also on my facebook page. The outline of things what you will get such as number of pictures, edited copies, album and hours will be through email inquiry.

I’m also ready for hired if you are engaged and you need a good looking guy to capture your ‘happyness’ in your actual wedding day.

Just a sweet reminder in case my readers do not know, I will be leaving to Melbourne Australia this month on 23rd June 2010. Some of my friends thought I already left and came back… So sad :( I don’t blame you all. Must be my previous brochure was too cluttered with pictures.

(Taken from my recent Creative Session portrait. The lips is a very mesmerizing tool.)

Phew, month of May i has been busy with two overdue wedding albums printing and thanks to RedNinja Camp I’m enjoying a privilege discount! Clients need to understand that the fee they pay a photographer is not just inclusive of the wedding day or pre wedding day itself but also the post processing time and time to design album dedicated to ensure my clients look great. Saying thank you or showing your appreciation is greatly needed to your photographer. Hehe.

Completed my church staff portraits which is an opportunity by buddy Melvin for such good offer. Shooting and editing for portraiture is not easy as we are trying to please everyone instead of husband and wife only. Phew, glad I did it and another point for coming out from my comfort zone. Helping out a bro George – Jofanna Bridal in his occasion pre-wedding shoots. Talk about sunburn and mosquitoes bite during the portraiture session with the lovely couples. Shout outs to you both.

Our church is also going for GCC new auditorium dedication celebration. All church photographers are on stand by and we attended rehearsal on how the program will be. If you are interested, join us at 5th June from 3.30pm for high tea and proceed to dedication at 5pm.

p/s- if you have any special request what you want to see more in this blog. Tips or pictures. Drop me a comment.

    Wedding by the Paradise

    May 4th, 2010

Last week, I went off to a Seminar + Bootcamp in Kuala Lumpur after my Philippines trip. Talk about pro active. Phew.

From this boot camp I learn a lot from Wiki Lee bout discovering your photography style. How you know if you got the Mojo or when you produce that consistent result? This is a journey to be an Experienced photographer where all pictures always yield consistent result. Ilona is Wiki best partner and in everything he said she compliment his sentence. They are just awesome husband and wife doing great seminar for 20 enthusiast photographers in the camp! Great couple from Sydney Australia to speak in Malaysia.

Who else is doing the talking? Jenny Sun, Grace Tan, Jon Low, Mark Leo and Alex the Backpackr! They spoke on different areas from email techs to choosing clients you love. They are also the RedNinja crews which have been working around the clock to make the event a successful one.

We did a little Challenge in the RedNinja Camp where each photographers has to provide their 5 best pics of models provided to show Depth of Field, Frame, Spectacular Lighting and Pose. The location of this shoot is Corus Paradise Hotel in Port Dickson.

    Here is my best five:

Rachel and Ser Young did a very good job and they are really gorgeous and handsome couple to work with. Mind you, Rachel is a bit pushy and don’t let her beauty cheat you. Just kidding.

    Photobucket

-A ninja will shoot Photo Journalistic (PJ) Style while a samurai will do Posing on the couple. Wataa~!

    Photobucket

-Play with light shine down from the ceiling.

    Photobucket

-The gown by Pretty in White is gorgeous~! Mini skirt hidden in front of the nice long dress. Great gown for pretty long legs brides!

    Photobucket

-caress her buttock, make her smile, talk funny to her. Things photog have to say to make the shot look natural. Tee hee.

    Photobucket

-Sweet shot done with full zoom on 200mm 2.8 to blur out the background totally. The shot that I got 5th place. Thanks judges.

Out of 20 participants, only 8 prizes are prepared. Out of 8 prizes all are Canon products. Out of 8 prizes, 3 are mini Canon 5d MkII thumbdrive and 5 are Canon Lenspen. Out of the 8 prizes, this last picture where Rachel is being carried up I got 5th place and I WON the Canon lenspen. Nikon, wake up please.

Out of the 8 prizes non Nikon products. Nikon, I have been joining quite several workshops or interacting with many photogs yet I seldom hear you participate nor provided many sponsor to workshop. Time to wake up and don’t let us Nikon supporters down ok? Please come up with better price range par to par with Canon full frame body price or else…. I’m so intrigued with the video capability brought by the 5d MkII. One day, one fine day.

All the shots here are done with Nikon Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 VR II. I didn’t bring along my sweet 50mm 1.4 due to I’m traveling light this time. The post process also done with Johnathan laptop and I redo the post process here back in Kota Kinabalu. Hope you enjoy my little entry :)

    Cheers!

    See you soon :)

    Wataaa~!!! RedNinja Camp

    April 7th, 2010

When you see the title above, I’m not going to become a real ninja and forget my photography. It’s all about wedding photography workshop for 2 days at a good deal of only near RM950 with good meals, roof over your head and 6 speakers. 1 from Aussie Perth, Wiki Lee San. BEAT THAT. But I heard the speakers have ninja trainings under their belt so I won’t really mess with their mojo. I hope I will be able to get a free seminar as the air ticket has been killing me.

Of course for people from Sabah travelling to Kuala Lumpur I will have to fork out another fee just for Air Asia. But its all good in the name of education and improving my skills to capture the awesomeness wedding moments for my clients.

Previously I spent for a seminar by Joe Mcnally the man himself which really inspired me a lot that the industry does takes more than just passion for camera gears or interest to take good photographs. Its really all about how you can interact with clients and how you handle the shoot in different scenarios throw to you.

What’s next? Hopefully, after the Ninja Camp I will join Yervant or Jerry Ghionis in his workshop in Melbourne June this year.

    GotMojo-small
    Cheers,

Sayonara Ninjas, till I see you again in KL.

Promenade Hotel Bridal Fair 2010 + Actual Wedding Coverage Service

    March 24th, 2010

This is a photo shoot I just did in Promenade Hotel Bridal Fair in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. A very good bridal fair for all the couples there who want to get married this year. This kind of fair is a boost to different industries such as the hotel banquet, food catering, beautician, make up artist, gown rental and of course not forgetting the wedding photographer. Thanks to my friend Joon Hin for inviting me to capture these pretty ladies in various wedding gowns prepared by Romance Bridal House in City Mall. Do check out the Promenade Hotel packages as well for their lovely package held in their new renovated banquet hall for good booking prices.

Such event gives us wedding photographers a hope to push better for our clients to capture moment that years later will turn into history remembrance for them. Why hire someone who own a camera and not committed to deliver that pictures which willing to charge below the market price? I charge a basic starting price of RM1,500 for actual wedding coverage. RM1,000 for E-Session (Engagement) portrait with your love one. I also have a basic outdoor photo shoot which cost RM480 for family portraiture or dating couple. This promotion is for bookings till 20th June 2010 or until further change I will notify through my website or through my fan page http://www.gilbertwong.com/fanpage.
