Hello,

I am Gilbert. I have been in the helping profession for three decades. I have been involved in pastoral and clinical counselling, and diverse leadership responsibilities, assigned to responsibilities at religious locations and at different academic levels of educational and chaplaincy settings.

My key strengths include giving public lectures, training and supervision in developing pastors, counsellors, prison officers, and social workers in active listening skills.

I value greatly collaborative and therapeutic work with patients who suffer from moderate to severe mental health disorders in a psychodynamic approach.

Year 2025 and Future Goals
  • Aims to set up a private practice that employs deep listening in a psychodynamic way and to employ spiritual/religious resources of clients for integration and the promoting of good mental health.
  • Aims to supervise and train care givers, care workers and care professionals in active listening for their self-development and the building of self-resilience to care for their care recipients.
Professional/Pastoral Experience

2011 – 2023

  • Appointed to chaplaincy work at St Andrew’s Community Services.
  • Qualified as a trained counsellor with Monash University.
  • Trained in Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • Trained to be a supervisor in Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • Trained and supervise staff from churches, hospital, social workers and pastors.
  • Appointed as a Lead Chaplain to Psychiatric Rehabilitation Cluster.
  • Constructed Chaplaincy Model of Care to trains churches with psychiatric community work.
  • Started to focus on psychiatric rehab work with patients who have religious and spiritual experiences.
  • Came under local psychoanalyst during these 12 years.
  • Gave a talk on mental health at an annual mental health conference.
  • Resigned from the organization in September 2023.

Key Achievements

  • Constructed a model of Chaplaincy Care to educate and train parishioners and pastors to employ relational and active listening skills.
  • Promote psychospiritual approach and interpretation of experiences of people in their religious and spiritual milieus.

2009 – 2010

  • Travelled to UK for continuing education and work in a largely Chinese community of migrant workers.

2002 – 2008

  • Appointed as a chaplain to kindergartens and a mission school.
  • Providing advice and counsel as a chairman to the kindergartens and as a board member to a mission school.
  • Moved the church out of site due to massive reconstruction of the land.
  • Worked collaboratively and consultatively with 10-12 stakeholders for the redevelopment of the land.
  • Encouraged donors and loaners to raise $4 million Singapore dollars to retrofit the church.

Key Achievements

  • Raised $4-5 million Singapore dollars through 250 earning members and returned all the money back to members within 1-2 years after reconstruction.
  • Enabling a kindergarten to earn about $1 million.
  • Awarded by the Ministry of Education for my work with the schools.

2001

  • A brief one year to participate in an outreach to the needy.

Key Achievements

  • Contributed towards the centre being awarded a special cluster centre by the government.

1999 – 2000

  • Resumed a one- year study in the UK at University of Bristol.
  • Conducted night topical classes for working adults in the Bristol area.

Key Achievements

  • Gave an Asian perspective as a lecturer to students in the evening classes.

1992 – 1998

  • As a new staff member learning the robes in three different churches.
  • Learning from the fellow colleagues the expansive outreaches of the mission schools and kindergartens to the community through some community projects.
  • Listening to and reaching out to students, their parents, teachers.
  • Working with stakeholders such as MOE schools and boarding house and Old Boys’ Association in the same vicinity.

Key Achievements

  • Travelled to the UK to bring Alpha Course from the Holy Trinity, Brompton to Singapore.
  • Flew in Nicky Gumbel and Sandy Miller to Singapore to introduce and promote the Alpha Course nationally and across denominations.
  • Contributed to the setting up of an Alpha National Office in Singapore.
